Complete guide to become creative! Methods and supplements

What is creativity?

Creativity is an extremely complex concept; the simplest definition would be describing creativity as an act, which involves any creative activity. Cambridge Dictionary defines Creativity as the ability to produce new, unusual thoughts and ideas. APA Psycnet portal expands this definition and adds that a new idea must meet certain qualitative criteria in order to be considered creative and must relate to the relevant task on which the individual is currently working.

Creativity requires originality and efficiency. In addition, creativity can be considered a manifestation of wisdom. Some Theories state that creativity is the creation of anything new, but the fact that something is new does not mean that it is original, unique or unusual, so many reject this theory as a description of creativity. However, the Online Library states that there are dozens of more or less different definitions of creativity.

For example, some theories claim that it is part of human intelligence, while others focus on whether creativity is exclusively a positive feature or ability or contains negative elements. Springer  adds that the individual does not have the same degree of creativity throughout his life. Creativity creates a curve that changes with age, with children usually being extremely creative. On the other side according to research, it does not have to be the case that an educated person is also a creative person. However, creativity is particularly challenging area to research. It is not easy to measure it (for example weight or height).

What does creativity depend on? We mentioned age, but that is not the only factor from which creativity comes. It also depends on the environment, twin research has shown that it is the environment in which we grow up  and live that affect us the most, also  the genes we inherited play a major role. Scientist are more and more interested to what degree creativity is inherited.

What is the connection between creativity and the brain?

In order to be successful in social or profesional life a person does not have to be a genius,  especially important is creativity of the person. That is why scientists are trying to understand which neural mechanisms are activated in the human brain that are responsible for creativity or how creativity and mood , motivation, reward system, or a neuromodulatory system, opaminergic or serotinergic system are comunicating and influencing each other.   Many people experience the highest levels of creativity during a depressive episode, when there are changes in the levels of neurotransmitters such as norepinephrine.

More and more studies show that creativity is not a completely spontaneous process, it does not arise just by itself, cognitive effort is much needed.  Memory is also an important element(Short-term, but also long-term), without which creative thinking would be impossible. In addition, the individual being capable of mental control ability to direct thought is needed. An essential part of creativity is also imagination, it is the ability to put a creative idea into the future and imagine what how this idea develop, behave, function. The hippocampus is responsible for this part of the process. Another study shows that while a person may not be a genius, it is important to have a long-term memory knowledge from different fields. These are usually located in the temporal and parietal lobes of the brain. Scientists believe that creativity requires a connection between those parts of the brain wich are under normall circumstance relatively weak.

Five Types of creativity

Just as there are many categories of intelligence, there are many understandings and categories of creativity. Adam Jorlen categorized creativity, setting aside 5 basic types :

Divergent thinking

Lateral thinking

Aesthetic thinking

System thinking

Inspirational thinking

Divergent Thinking

Divergent thinking involves researching and creating large quantities of new ideas, trying to find new solution. In divergent thinking, it is not important that every single thought is ingenious,It is important that the individual is able to adapt and produce a number of new ideas, of whichHe then selects the most original and effective ones.  For example, brainstorming can be helpful; however, there is no need to stop after the first good idea but to continue on. Divergent thinking is ideally useful, when solving an open-ended problem (for example, what can I write an article about?).

Lateral thinking

Lateral thinking (outside of box thinking) involves the ability to come up with new, innovative Ideas.  It means looking at the problem critically and unconventionally, differently from what the problem was looked at so far. The idea is to identify the core of the problem,  gain knowledge from different areas about the given problem, then create a penetration and apply this knowledge, but not in a rigid way.

Aesthetic thinking

As the name suggests, aesthetic thinking involves the ability to create new ideas in art. It is the ability to create and recognize what is beautiful. It’s a way to create something harmonious, something that can please the senses, something considered pleasant and aesthetic, whether it is fine arts, theater art or some kind of music. For some, however,  it is  formulas, equations or calculations, therefore, aesthetic thinking can also be a part of mathematics, physics or chemistry.

System thinking

System thinking includes the ability to see independent thoughts, but also their interrelationship; It is the ability to see the whole thought, not just a summary of individual thoughts. In layman’s terms, it is the ability to connect ,make points and understand that if a part changes, the whole concept will change and vice versa.

Inspirational thinking

Inspirational thinking is the ability to be inspired by someone, when creating and solving problems. It is an impulse or “Whoa!” moment that comes in unexpected situations, for example In the shower or during sleep. Such inspiration is also called higher creativity and is often more effective than other types of creativity mentioned above.

Meditation

People have been using meditation to their advantage for centuries. In addition to helping to calm the mind, it is also used to encourage creativity. Studies show that a type of meditation called integrative body-mind training (IBMT) in addition to encouraging creativity, reducesStress, increases cognitive flexibility, supports the ability to concentrate and improves mood. The advantage of meditation is that it is enough to meditate for 30 minutes a day, 7 days in a row, for the individual to begin to feel its positive effects.

Change of the work environment

In addition to meditation, creativity can also be encouraged by changing the work environment. It is important to spend time on a place that stimulates our senses and avoid monotony. To spark the flame of our creative ideas add for example greenery in the form of a potted plant on the work table. Change can also help creativity, colors of the environment or decoration(in a gray environment without any stimuli, the mind is difficult to start). For example, studies show that red allows us to focus better on details, blue effectively encourages creativity in the work environment.

BDNF and long walks

BDNF   (Brain derived neurotrophic factor) is a neurotropic factor commonly present in the Central Nervous System of an adult, it belongs to the group of nerve growth factors (NGF). It is a protein that performs in the central as well as in the peripheral nervous system a number of important functions, for example, preventing the death of existing brain cells and promotes the formation of new neurons. The level of BDNF in the body can be increased quite easily, long walks or other physical activity can help you. One walk  is enough to increase the level of BDFN in the body for the short term, long term physical excercise and longer walks are recomended.

Kava Kava

Kava Kava  is an well-known plant used for centuries, it is an extract from the  root of Piper methysticum mainly user to treat anxiety and insomnia. As a Nootropic it is available in the form of capsules, tea or tinctures.

Cavalactone is the substance active in Kava kava which is a topic of discussion and research nowadays.

When it comes to positive effects, Kava acts neuroprotective and some studies suggest that is also affects the level of neurotransmitters in our bodies(for example on GABA). Acording to some studies Kava Kava supports also cognitive funcions, imroves memory, mood and the ability to concentrate.

Aniracetam

Aniracetam belongs to the group of nootropics that support cognitive abilities. According to studies Aniracetam positively affects glutamate receptors and supports the functioning of the cholinergic system and also affects leaching of serotonin and dopamine. It strengthens memory, the ability to learn and overall mental performance. Some studies suggest that aniracetam also has antidepresive effects.

Sulbutiamine

Sulbutiamine is a synthetic derivative of thiamine. As a nootropic it is used in chronic cases of

Exhaustion, it improves our mood, helps fight anxiety, depression and promotes motivation.

It has an antioxidant effect and some studies suggest that sulbutamine also has a positive effect on an individual’s cognitive health, for example, it improves memory capabilities (affects both short – term and long – term memory) by supporting the production of the neurotransmitter acetylcholine in the body. However, it also affects dopamine levels and glutamate.

Bacopa monnieri

Bacopa monnieri, otherwise called brahmi, is a plant that has been known for centuries for its medicinal  effects.  It is used for panic attacks, anxiety issues, but also to improve memory skills. It acts as a sedative and is even used by patients who suffer from epilepsy. The extract of the plant acts as a nootropic, some studies it is called a neural tonic. It has a neuroprotective effect which affects the inhibition of acetylcholinesterase and the operation of many neurotransmitters, including dopamine. In addition, it improves blood flow brain.

Rhodiola rosea

Rhodiola rosea is a plant that is very popular in traditional medicine, currently being studied by scientists for its adaptogenic effects.

This plant stimulates the nervous system, reduces the effects of stress, helps with treatment of depression, lowers the feeling of general exhaustion and supports the overall performance of the individual.

One of the undeniable benefits of the plant is that it promotes overall brain health and function. Studies suggest that rhodiola affects the level of neurotransmitters in the brain. Rhodiola rosea increases a person’s resistance to outside stress, promotes mental alertness and the ability to concentrate.

Fasoracetam

Fasoracetam is gaining popularity mainly as a nootropic. It acts as an anxiolytic, it helps to fight anxiety, depression, improves mood, improves memory skills(supports the ability to receive, store but also later retrieve the necessary information from memory) and supports the ability to concentrate and learn. Fasoracetam affects GABA receptors as well as acetylcholine levels in the body.

Lions mane

Lions mane is a fungus also known as yamabushitake and is used in both the culinary arts and

in medicine. Consumption of nootropic fungus has a number of benefits, for example it supports the overall brain and nervous system. Due to the high content of hericenones and erinacinones,  lions mane supports  creation of the so-called nerve growth factor (NGF), and thus the growth of new neurons and nerve connections in the brain.

Lions Mane  has a positive effect on the cholinergic system, has a neuroprotective effect and, in addition, prevents memory loss, for example in neurodegenerative diseases.

CBD oil

CBD oil acts as a nootropic, it is famous due to its wide range of benefits and also has  positive effects on cognitive individual health. It has an antioxidant effect, affects the level of serotonin in the body, helps with the reduction of consequences from stress, helps patients suffering from depression or anxiety, improves sleep quality and works as  neuroprotective.
